The Underworld / Re: The River Styx

The ferryman glided across the surface of the water, the chains that bound him to the ship pulling it along behind him. He regretted that the worst part about his job was listening to people talk. The pointless questions... 'Why am I here?'... 'What's going to happen to me now?'... After spending countless ages guiding souls across the river, he'd grown tired of them and had taken to ignoring his cargo in all but the most necessary situations.

He made a mental note to ask the Fury to possibly assist in the ferrying duties more often. At least this boy had no need to address him with all of his curiosities, even if he had to overhear it.

Charon takes the 2nd coin and puts them both somewhere into his cloak. His bony hand tugs on one of the chains coming from its twisted mess wrapped around his body and dipping into the waters. It seemed that the several chains that fell from him were connected to a great weight, because the chain he tugged did not give easily or move very far. But still, he tugged three times and on the third he sighed.

"Stand back, please."

The waters became disturbed, just as they had when Charon showed himself. But this time, it was softer. A fog came over the surface of the water and disturbed the view of the same roiling and bubbling that had been before the boatman surfaced. But then, the bubbling slowed and eventually stopped altogether.

And then a mighty splash came forth from the river as a large boat came breaking through the surface all at once. It seemed waterlogged, still spewing out the contents of the river from its body even as it bobbed on the now waving waters of the river Styx. Many things grew upon it, some things one would do well not to touch. The banisters and rails, the masts and the wheel that drove it all seemed to have been of legendary craftsmanship at one time or another but have faded over eons of water erosion. Even the wheel had broken and fallen over upon itself.

But the most noticeable thing about the boat was the rusted clinking chains bolted here and there to the front of the boat. It even seemed as though the carving of the woman on the front were holding the chains in her hands. They dipped at a shallow angle beneath the water and seemed to rise precisely where Charon was standing.

A wooden plank came from the boat, extended by some invisible force, and sloped down to the shore creating a ramp for the mage and the Fury to board the vessel.

"Get in."

The cloaked man craning over the mage made a lazy growling noise of disapproval and gestured for him to hurry up and give him the coins.

He followed Thanatos further, not yet satisfied with his findings. He would not return to the Black Palace after that outburst he just had empty-handed.

But in the meantime, it was nice to finally be here in Tartarus when not being tested on his memorization of the pathways or being lured into becoming the Titans' after-dinner snack. He enjoyed observing Thanatos in his work. If you could call it work.

He had taken to clinging to the rocky roof over Thanatos' head, better to stay out of his view. Though his perspective was skewed from his upside down position, Zagreus observed those being punished with a slight mix of sympathy and entrancement.

Zagreus came crawling upon the scene and froze in place. Positioned far behind the embodiment of death itself, he could observe what Thanatos himself observed. The young God had a small appreciation for this. After all, he was quite used to sacrifices being made in his name, often times human sacrifices and occasionally tortured beforehand. Not exactly proud, but used to it.

He scuffled a bit closer high upon the wall and wondered to himself if Thanatos had his way of things, would this be the norm for every soul down here?

Zagreus had just stormed out of his father's palace in one of the forms he more passably got away with here in the Underworld. An infernal looking creature, reptilian in body but with the wings of a blue macaw and razor sharp teeth. Talons allowed it to grip onto rocky surfaces, trees, most anything but not without leaving a mark. Zagreus prided himself in his ability to alter his form so freely but this was not suitable to his needs as he traveled to where he thought it most likely he would come across Thanatos: the great prison of the Underworld, Tartarus.

As he neared the entrance to the dreadful place, he let his wings ease up and began his descent. As he landed down on firm ground, he brought his body to shift into a much smaller and less noticeable form. His grayish green scales began to blacken and his wings shrunk back into his skin. The reptilian tail curled up over his back while all of his skin covered in scales hardened shrank. Within mere moments, he was a pure black scorpion the size of a normal man's fist. And down here, he was hardly threatening. What little lived on in the Underworld tended to remain undisturbed.

He scurried along the ground for a while before getting more comfortable going along the walls, navigating the way as he knew it. As the son of the ruler of this domain, he knew it well. Still searching for any sign of Thanatos, he ran along the path while contemplating the argument he had just had with his father and what he'd be willing to do to prove to Hades once and for all exactly how much he was worth.

Zagreus's eyes shifted from his usual somber gray to onyx black and he turned on his heel to face Hades.

"The Orphic Hymns still invoke my name, father. Don't forget that you were feared in ancient Greece as ruler of the Underworld but I was worshiped by mortals for being the very reason they're alive today. You're just the boogyman compared to me. Do you remember the Alcmeonis? You know, one of my earlier appearances in mortal literature. How did that line go again? Oh, yes, I remember now. 'Mistress Earth and Zagreus who art above all other Gods.' No wonder that book was practically destroyed. No doubt either you or Zeus were responsible. But the fact remains that the mortals seem to think I'm good enough. You're lucky I'm even offering to help you!"

His fists were clenched tightly and his skin felt feverish even without touching him. Small tufts of smoke escaped his mouth as he released yet another enraged rant, signaling the growing fire in his belly. He calmed himself enough to give an apologetic glance to his mother without that fury in his eyes before shifting into a horrible creature like a sharp-fanged lizard with feathered wings and taking off, leaving the throne room behind.

((The tale of Zagreus goes that Zeus took the form of a serpent and laid down with Persephone and she bore Zagreus. A jealous Hera cast him down to Tartarus for the Titans to destroy. They distracted him with toys and attempted to devour him, but he changed between forms of many animals to escape. His last form was that of a bull as he attempted to fight back and run free, but the Titans grabbed hold of him and tore him to pieces and devoured him. All that was left was his heart. Zeus discovered this crime and hurled a thunderbolt, killing the Titans and turning them to ash. From the ashes of the Titans, mixed with the divine flesh they had eaten, man was made. This has always been used to explain the balance of good and evil in humankind, due to the divinity of Zagreus and the maliciousness of the Titans. Persephone saved the still-beating heart of the immortal Zagreus and Zeus implanted it within a mortal woman through which he was reborn again. Some accounts say he was reassembled by Demeter. Further accounts claim Hades as Zagreus' father, since Hades is sometimes referred to as Zeus Katchthonios or "Underground Zeus". As I have my character's backstory now, Persephone used her healing abilities to revive Zagreus rather than a mortal woman being involved or using a different vegetation Goddess when Persephone works just fine and makes sense seeing as she's his mother.))

Charon extended his emaciated hand towards the boy, palm facing upward.

"Payment?"

Zagreus smirked and gave Hades a triumphant look very quickly before returning his attention to Persephone.

"I think it would be easiest to begin with a little bit of spying. There are hundreds of creatures that prowl the caverns of the Underworld. Thanatos won't pay any attention to a scorpion nesting in the rocks. I can find out what he wants, who his allies are, and what he's planning to do next."

As though called by the mention of the name, the waters of the river Styx began to bubble and roil as something rose towards the surface. A deeply hooded head broke the surface first, the rest of the body coming swiftly after it as though being raised on some kind of platform. But beneath the incredibly tall and slender man's feet was only the now perfectly still waters of the river.

Craning over the two, this figure was cloaked in a dark material that seemed the same color as deep grave soil. Tattered and frayed over time, the cloak's edges danced in absent wind and scented the air with the smell of salt and decay. Rusted chains wrapped around his chest and arms, the ends of which descended back into the depths of the water. What little of his face shown under the hood - hollowed cheeks, a stern jaw, and marks akin to water-rot on wood blemishing his skin. His lips were **** and pale. When he opened his mouth to speak, the jagged teeth hidden behind those lips portrayed the seeming of both an elderly man and a wild man one would do best to keep their distance from.

He looked immediately towards the woman and then to the boy, then back to the woman.

"What brings you here to me, Erinyes? You and your sisters have not personally delivered one of your vanquished to me in a very long time."

The God-child glanced at Hades for a brief moment in recognition of his question. He turned his eyes back to his mother and gave her the answer.

"You know very well of my shape changing abilities. I've tricked people before, countless times over the many centuries past. I don't doubt I could fool Thanatos just as easily."

The sound of sharp heels of heavy boots echoed off the floor of the palace, a slow and lazy tempo that caught the King and Queen's attentions before catching sight of their mutual charge. He had a fondness for the shade and seemed to only prefer moving within its veil. However, as his footsteps lessened in frequency and volume, he stepped out of the dull shadows and crossed his arms over his chest. His eyes cringed slightly in the light and he sighed in annoyance.

"Hello Mother. Father," There was no hiding the tinge of poison in his voice as he addressed Hades. He even accompanied it with a glare from beneath his heavy-lidded eyes. "Couldn't help but overhear your conversation. Large voices do carry, you know, and my hearing has never been dull. I hope you'll forgive my transgression," He said without breaking eye contact with his mother, Persephone. "I have a bit of a proposition to make."
