Title: The River Styx
Post by: Kaya Mitsume on July 25, 2012, 03:59:30 pm
An eternally flowing river, it carries the souls of the dead back into the cycle so that they might be born again.

Shinji awakens beside flowing waters. It is unclear where they come from, but as his senses awaken and he focuses, the sound of it is unmistakeable. His eyes have something placed over them, obscuring his vision, and stopping them from opening.

These objects are round and flat, slightly heavy and cold overtop his eyes.

He now holds two pewter medallions in his hands. His eyes can open, and they can see around him. His surroundings are very dark. Not bleak, per se, but definitely not cheerful or happy. There is an air of solemnity here.

For very long moments, there is no answer. He almost thinks none will be forthcoming. Until a feminine voice sounded behind him. "You are very young, aren't you?"

A woman with fiery red hair that fell in waves to her waist is standing there in little clothing. Her hands are clearly taloned. Her face is human, but has very sharp features. Her wings are folded back, but they are a smoky grey. Her eyes are the same smoky grey. Her face is beautiful and exotic. Nearly animalistic in some ways.

Her body is a woman's body, but is scaled in glittering black and grey in areas. The scales don't cover much. "I am one Sister of three. Who are you, young one?"

She cocked her head in a birdlike fashion, focusing on him with a sharp grey eye. "You've found yourself in the Underworld, little one. It's not often one gets lost down here. Or comes without knowing." She is watching him, shifting closer. She studies the way he moves, nearly everything about him. "I have no call for your name, young Shinji. Be thankful. Now, you have just made me curious."

The grey eyed woman stepped closer, head tilting. "You are something to breed curiosity, young mage. The skein is strange on you. It is not severed, but nor is it intact. You are dead. And not." She stepped forward, a small hand laid upon his chest, as if testing exactly how alive he felt.

"Your heart does not beat further. You breathe to speak, only. You are dead and not. I am unnameable, but I will be your escort. We should cross the river very soon. When Charon returns." She told him, head bobbing in the avian way.

As though called by the mention of the name, the waters of the river Styx began to bubble and roil as something rose towards the surface. A deeply hooded head broke the surface first, the rest of the body coming swiftly after it as though being raised on some kind of platform. But beneath the incredibly tall and slender man's feet was only the now perfectly still waters of the river.

Craning over the two, this figure was cloaked in a dark material that seemed the same color as deep grave soil. Tattered and frayed over time, the cloak's edges danced in absent wind and scented the air with the smell of salt and decay. Rusted chains wrapped around his chest and arms, the ends of which descended back into the depths of the water. What little of his face shown under the hood - hollowed cheeks, a stern jaw, and marks akin to water-rot on wood blemishing his skin. His lips were **** and pale. When he opened his mouth to speak, the jagged teeth hidden behind those lips portrayed the seeming of both an elderly man and a wild man one would do best to keep their distance from.

He looked immediately towards the woman and then to the boy, then back to the woman.

"What brings you here to me, Erinyes? You and your sisters have not personally delivered one of your vanquished to me in a very long time."

Head turning sharply to Charon, her wings adjusted themselves, settling. She stepped closer to the solemn ferryman. "He is not mine. He found himself here. It interests me enough that I will be his escort through the gates. I have not had someone to claim in sometime. I want to hear those screams." She told the waterman.

Grey eyes cast to the teenager. "Come, odd mageling. You have your payment there in your hand. Let us not dawdle."

Charon extended his emaciated hand towards the boy, palm facing upward.

"Payment?"

Her taloned hand moved out to prod at him with a claw. "You have two, boy. Present them." That claw is not gentle. It's sharp. She steps forward. She does not have payment demanded of her. The living don't pass, the dead must pay, but the immortal do as they wish.

The cloaked man craning over the mage made a lazy growling noise of disapproval and gestured for him to hurry up and give him the coins.

Charon takes the 2nd coin and puts them both somewhere into his cloak. His bony hand tugs on one of the chains coming from its twisted mess wrapped around his body and dipping into the waters. It seemed that the several chains that fell from him were connected to a great weight, because the chain he tugged did not give easily or move very far. But still, he tugged three times and on the third he sighed.

"Stand back, please."

The waters became disturbed, just as they had when Charon showed himself. But this time, it was softer. A fog came over the surface of the water and disturbed the view of the same roiling and bubbling that had been before the boatman surfaced. But then, the bubbling slowed and eventually stopped altogether.

And then a mighty splash came forth from the river as a large boat came breaking through the surface all at once. It seemed waterlogged, still spewing out the contents of the river from its body even as it bobbed on the now waving waters of the river Styx. Many things grew upon it, some things one would do well not to touch. The banisters and rails, the masts and the wheel that drove it all seemed to have been of legendary craftsmanship at one time or another but have faded over eons of water erosion. Even the wheel had broken and fallen over upon itself.

But the most noticeable thing about the boat was the rusted clinking chains bolted here and there to the front of the boat. It even seemed as though the carving of the woman on the front were holding the chains in her hands. They dipped at a shallow angle beneath the water and seemed to rise precisely where Charon was standing.

A wooden plank came from the boat, extended by some invisible force, and sloped down to the shore creating a ramp for the mage and the Fury to board the vessel.

"Get in."

The Fury shared a look with the boatman. It was a pitying look. Silly mageling. "Little one, many have asked that question before you, and alas, many will ask it again. He may very well know, but it would take more than you have to give to make the ferryman share his information." The woman boarded the vessel, standing at it's head as if she's been there before.

She looked at the boy. "You're very attractive, but certainly not worldly. My advice? Watch who you ask for anything here. Nothing is free." She shoved that flaming red mass of hair back behind her. "In fact, much of anything down here is exceedingly, life alteringly expensive. They play for keeps."

The unnameable leaned against the side of the boat, looking out at the milky waters. She feels his eyes, but isn't put off by it. "Because you fascinate me. So, you'll remain in my service until my curiosity is satisfied. You need someone willing to aid you and escort you. That would be me, because I see no other willing to claim you. And you willnot enjoy what happens if you are not claimed when we reach the gates." A small, taloned hand lifted gesturing ahead of them, through the mists.

"Knowing that, are you really going to deny me my curiosities and fascinations, little one?" Her grey eyes settled on him, her head tilted in that birdlike fashion. "Are you going to deny companionship?"

The ferryman glided across the surface of the water, the chains that bound him to the ship pulling it along behind him. He regretted that the worst part about his job was listening to people talk. The pointless questions... 'Why am I here?'... 'What's going to happen to me now?'... After spending countless ages guiding souls across the river, he'd grown tired of them and had taken to ignoring his cargo in all but the most necessary situations.

He made a mental note to ask the Fury to possibly assist in the ferrying duties more often. At least this boy had no need to address him with all of his curiosities, even if he had to overhear it.
